Mandala Seeds

Mandala Seed Store

Mandala seed store is a heritage seed banking initiative.

The saving of heritage and open pollinated seed varieties is vital to the survival of food crops that are adapted to local conditions. In addition, planting these seeds and saving them ensures that you are able to save your own seed from generation to generation. In an era of food control and market control it is crucial that we produce seeds that are ‘clean’, GMO free and fertile.

We co-operate with a range of seed producers in the semi-arid climate – which describes much of Southern Africa’s climatic conditions.

These seeds are grown largely in the Klein Karoo region of the Western Cape. Our areas are characterised by hot, bright and dry summers with temperatures of up to 44 degrees Celsius. Autumn and spring are much milder although we can experience frosts in both seasons. In winter we have over 20 frost days, and minimum temperatures can be lower than -2 degrees Celsius. Our water is generally slightly saline and soils quite alkaline. The plants grow in Permaculture systems and no chemicals or poisons are used in their production or processing.

The packaging is plain paper envelopes, so your seed packets should be stored in a well-sealed glass jar in a cool dark place to ensure good germination rates and seed longevity.
