Regenerative Water Harvesting Services

Water infrastructure design

All regenerative land-use systems require a range of different water catchment, storage and use systems that enable long term water sustainability that are not technology dependent. Our designs are earthwork based, cheap to establish, easy to maintain and create a long term regenerative infrastructure to support a range of ecological production systems

Our Process

How to start the Consultation Process.

  • The first step is to get hold of us via email or send a Whatsapp/Telegram/Signal Message (voice messages are best as you can provide plenty of info on your context).
  • Please do not phone us as we are not in cell signal and because we are farming we are mostly outdoors.
  • Tell us what you are wanting and send a location for the property involved.
  • We will then set up a 30 minute video call (free of charge) to get into more detail and discuss a viable way forward that suits you.
  • We will then decide if a site visit is necessary or whether the entire process can be done virtually.

The following are just some of the systems we design and help implement.

Z
Keyline Design (Design system for maximum water run-off catchment and storage to enable gravity fed irrigation)
Z
Keyline Earth Dams
Z
Backflood Swale Dams
Z
Comprehensive contour based water spreading and sinking systems using swales and subsoil ripping
Z
Sand Dams and Small Diversion Weirs
Z
Earth Imprinting
Z
Berms and Basins, Terracing, off contour diversion of water to storage points.
Z
Micro-scale homestead based earthworks to catch and infiltrate all rain water falling on and aroung your house.
Z
Design of effective micro-irrigation systems for vegetable systems and food forests
Z
Grey water recycling systems.
Z
Urban water sustainability systems that will either enable independence from or reduction in use of municipal water.

Design of Regenerative Water Harvesting & Storage Earthworks on Farm in Riversdale. The Design created capacity for the harvesting and storage of 11 million liters of water in dams and rehydrated the entire farm via swales and subsoil ripping on contour. Previous to the design the farm had no water and all water harvested is from run-off from an above ridge.

Backflood Swale Dam Design in Riversdale

3 months after completion the dams were full and have remained full ever since

Regenerating Fields

Regenerating Lucerne Production Fields with Swales and Contour Subsoiling. The field is now a sponge and has zero run-off. This enables soils to regenerate and water accumulation in soils to occur, drastically reducing irrigation requirements and providing a sustainable ground water table under the fields. The Swales will now be planted to production trees in polyculture.

Whole Property Water Infrastructure Design

We can design a complete water harvesting, storage and use layout for your property, whether urban or rural. This will involve a comprehensive earthworks/terraforming pattern using swales, dams, keyline, pocket ponds, gabions, berms and basins and a whole lot more to not only drought proof your property but create water abundance. We design a range of water catchement, storage and reuse systems based on tanks, cisterns, soil infiltration systems, waste water recycling and more.

Designing Dams

We design and implement a range of small scale contour dams that are linked across the landscape with swales. These dams do not sit in streams but rather at the foot of valleys and on ridges and harvest the large amount of water that runs over the landscape in hard rains. These dams are smaller than 20 000 cubes.

Water Source Assesment

We will come to your property or do virtual observation and assess it for water sources. We look into the viability of dams, swales, boreholes, weirs, sand dams and a variety of way of harvesting water onto and on the property. Many sources are not obvious to the untrained eye and we have a range of service providers to support us.

Land Restoration

We design contour water harvesting earthworks that stabilise and recover badly eroded land, turning and ineffective and degenerating land unit into a productive and regenerating land unit. We catch, spread, sink and use water across the land, using a variety of approaches, ensuring further erosion is impossible and the land unit immediatly begins recovering, accumulating water, minerals and mulch. We can design appropriate land use infrastructures to turn the unit into productivity.

River Training

We design and implement river and stream course rehabilitation systems that are very low impact and based on using gabions to build sand dams that prevent streams from scouring down and create effective water storage in streams without interfearing with stream flow. We place and build gabion groynes to stop rivers from undercutting valuable production and settlement land.

Subsoiler that opens up the soil without tillage and minimum disturbance to soil profile. This pattern of ripping allows water to infiltrated deeper into the soil, pulling oxygen in with it to stimulate soil building processes in the soil.

Perfect foundation for long term regenerative agricultural systems.

Restoration of degraded land into high production potential for pasture and trees…

One Day Water Harvesting Visit

We will visit your site and spend the day assessing the landscape and property as a whole for long-term water sustainabilty in the context of your aims and objectives for the property.

Assessment critreria we will use for this service

Z
Site based water sources and storage  such as dams, springs, boreholes, well-points and hard surface catchment options
Z
Assesment of appropriateness and quality of pumping and storage technology and suggest energy efficient options if pumping technologies are inappropriate. We work in partnership with ceritified experts in off-grid and on-grid puming technologies who will be able to assist in the design of irrigation, grey water and black water processing systems and supply the highest quality equipment with the service to suit the needs of your system.
Z
Assessment of the site for the development of water harvesting earthworks and the development of a interlinked eartworks such as swales, keylines, berms ad basins that will raise infiltation of water into the ground and direct excess to storage points.
Z
Assessment of soil types and sample taking for the purposes of dam building
Z
Assesment of topography for the placement of dams and keylines
Z
Application of the National Water Act to the circumstances of the property where appropriate
Z
Berms and Basins, Terracing, off contour diversion of water to storage points.
Z
The layout of access roads in relation to water harvesting of landscapes
Z
Erosion rehabilitation and remedial technologies
Z
How to make an urban home water effcient so that you can reduce your water bill every month and if circumstances allow go completely off-grid with your own water supply
